Who is teaching the singing lessons ?

Academy owner, teacher, Margaret George-Hahle, BFA, has an extensive and varied background in study and performance, and over forty years of sharing her experience with students. Read more

What type of lessons are available?
Lesson Type Private, individual singing lessons. A pianist will provide live piano accompaniment at lessons.
Music Genres We teach art song, folk, pop, musical theatre, opera, sacred / oratorio, contemporary.
Student Ages We welcome children ages 5 and up, teens, young adults, adults all ages.
Skill Levels We teach complete beginners, intermediate and advanced singers.
We also offer advanced voice training and teach singing performance skills to professional singers.
Lesson Times Monday to Friday, afternoons and evenings.
Lesson Duration 30 minutes, 45 minutes, 1 hour.
Scheduling Full session: weekly lessons.
Short term (i.e. special events) available for experienced singers.
Sessions Full Term: September to June (10 months).
Summer Session: mid June – 1st week of August (6 weeks).

What music genres can I learn to sing?
Opera
  • Delight your friends and family performing your favorite arias from famous operas.
  • If foreign languages are not your strength, do not worry; we provide language coaching.
  • We do fully staged and costumed operatic solo, duet and ensemble scenes for the Academy concerts.
  • If interested, we can also prepare you for operatic competitions and auditions.
Art Song
  • Art songs of Scarlatti, Bach, Handel, Mozart, Schubert, Fauré, Quilter, MacNutt – to name a few. The list is long, the songs are timeless.
  • Choose your favourite composer, explore the wonderful literature, and learn to sing songs in their original language.
  • This literature is also used as requirements for voice exams, singing competitions and auditions.
Musical Theatre
  • You can experience fully staged and costumed musical theatre solo or ensemble scenes.
  • Some of our performances (e.g. Variety Show, Summer Session Concert) include musical theatre selections.
  • As usual, if you are interested, we can prepare you for solo entries in musical theatre competitions.
  • We provide the directing, acting, choreography, and of course the singing training you need.
Pop
  • If “Pop” musical literature is where you interest lies, you can learn some favorites old and new, that are suitable to your voice.
  • You are welcome to perform your interpretation of your favorite pop songs in our Variety and Summer shows.
Folk
  • Many students are interested in folk songs, traditional and new. Most of these songs are approachable even by the beginner student, and provide good learning literature.
  • We have a large repertoire in our library, but are happy to explore new literature from your ethnic background.
  • If you play guitar, you are welcome to accompany yourself at concerts.
  • Advanced singers may choose to perform folk songs “a capella” (i.e. without any accompaniment).
Sacred / Oratorio
  • If you are interested in improving your singing technique to enable you to better share your voice in worship, we have extensive repertoire and performance experience in sacred music.
  • Our expertise and repertoire in Oratorio includes works such as Handel’s Messiah.
  • Several of our concerts include sacred / oratorio selections.
Contemporary Art Song
  • If you like pushing artistic boundaries, you will love contemporary music.
  • Many of our students prepare for, and participate in, the Calgary Contemporary Showcase each November as an extra performance venue.
  • The modern and contemporary classical music repertoire offers the opportunity to explore and discover countless musical gems.
What vocal skills will I learn?
Basic Singing Warmup Exercises, Breathing Technique, Tone Production, Tuning, Songs specific to age and level, Practice Methods.
Advanced Singing Refinement of Placement and Focus, Vocal Register Blending and Extending, Further Development in Breath Support, Improved Sound Projection, Advanced Literature, Language Coaching.
